What will you learn?  Tons of information and practical experience will be provided in this exciting course.  We will look at the landscapes of two phenomenal masters from the post-impressionist era, namely Edward Seago (1910-1974) and Errol Boyley (1918-2007).

Seago was a self-taught British painter, writer, and illustrator, born in Norwich and became known for his remarkable atmospheric landscapes, seascapes and skyscapes that captured the attention of both the public and the British Royal families.

Errol Boyley was a South African painter of landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, figures and wild life.  He was also a professional guitar player.  In his art Boyley was mainly self taught but also studied during his late 20's at the Natal Technical College.  He held many successful exhibitions throughout his art career and was later approached by the Royal Arts Academy in London for some of his paintings.  Boyley is well-known for his expressive landscapes which he infused with colour and light.

Join me in exploring the different painting techniques of these two master painters and learn how to apply these techniques to your own landscapes. Create captivating skies, farm lands, country houses and sand dunes filled with light, atmosphere and splendour from the post-impressionistic methods and styles of these great master painters.

Learn how to mix and apply harmonizing neutrals that will infuse your landscapes with visual vibrancy.  Loosen up your style and discover how different brush strokes can add energy and interest to your paintings.  Learn how to push the boundaries of colour to create expressive and energetic landscape scenes.

It is only by studying and learning from the great masters before us that we can truly discover the endless possibilities that will enable us to grow and fulfill our own destinies as painters of a new era.

Included in the workshop will be intensive discussions on the painting materials we will be using such as palette layout, brushes, paints, paint manufacturers - what to buy and what to avoid, knives etc.  How to care for an oil painting, tips on varnishing, framing, galleries, selling of art, copyright laws and much more.  I provide a lot of mini demonstrations on technical and colour mixing aspects during the course along with other practical tips and advice on oil painting which you can apply to your own works at home.  You will also get the opportunity to take a look at my own paintings in my private art studio as well as have a look at the many different art books which I can recommend.  This is much more than a workshop, this course allows me to share with you my passion for painting, my knowledge and practical experience which I hope will enable you to reach further as you continue to fulfill your own personal goals as an oil painter.

You will complete and sign your painting on the last day of the course.  You will also be required to provide it with a title of your own choosing.  If time permits you will have the opportunity to start with a second painting to put into practice what you have learned from the course. I will assist you with this painting which you can complete at home.

Loosen up your style and discover that painting on a small format does not mean having to paint tightly!! See how different brush strokes can add energy and interest to smaller works and learn how to push the boundaries of colour to create expressive and energetic small seascapes.   Many of my paintings are done on a small format (23 x 30 cm) and I have learned a great deal by studying the works of the late great masters.

As many of the world's top plein air painters will tell you, there are many advantages to painting on smaller formats compared to large scale formats.  So come and discover the power of a small canvas that is filled with atmosphere and visual vibrancy.

I will be doing a lot of demo work on my own canvas as well as assist you with colour mixing and technical aspects.  You will learn to use the tooth of your painting support to achieve interesting colour results.
